be yourself

Just a few quotes to remind you to 'be yourself'.

This one is from Dr. Seuss.

This one's sort of by Kurt Cobain.

Is there a quote you love so much you'd wear it around your neck?

Or display in your home?

The truth is, I'm a painting fan. It never occurred to me to display words-to-live-by in my home. I bookmarked these quotes primarily for Isabella. I thought they were appropriate during a teenager's journey towards self-discovery. I figured the journey could lead to self-doubt. But I should have known my Isabella, who was always feisty and strong-willed even as a child, would be one self-assured teen. Because several weeks ago, I told Isabella I was going to do this thing (I think, it was 'microwave some queso de bola' or 'wear the Uniqlo rainjacket we both had'. I can't really remember.). She said she was going to do the same. So I teased, "Am I your idol?" And she said, "No." Pretending to be offended, she said, "I'm an individual!" I should have known Isabella would always BE HERSELF! :)

sweet serendipity

Am loving the music video of Lee DeWyze's Sweet Serendipity. He leaves typography cut-outs throughout the video on the night before... which his girl picks up as she goes through the same streets in New York the morning after.

The song is also a pretty good feel-good song. :)

Photos are screenshots from the video. Layout by moi.

The cut-out letters remind me of the mystery T from 101gramsofeyecandy. Click here for previous posts on typography.

dear Wally

The Where's Wally books usually keep my kids quietly engrossed for a while, searching for Wally, Woof, Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard and Odlaw (which I just recently noticed is Waldo spelled backwards!). Except when the scenes are just too difficult. Like this one. The Land of Wallies where you're supposed to look for the Wally without a shoe (who is instead wearing a striped red-and-white sock).

During these times, this hilarious note from Dear Blank, Please Blank makes so much sense!

Have a fun weekend with your kids!

dear fork

I know I've written about Dear blank, Please blank cards here before. But I just can't get over how funny this particular one is!

Something hilarious to start off a fun weekend!

Today, I am loving...

Today, I am loving this typography-initial trend.
  • I know there are quite a bit of ampersands in the photo above, but I love them (see related post here).
  • Katie Holmes' Jennifer Meyer diamond-encrusted pendants reappear because I am still in love with the idea of wearing your children's initials around your neck (see related post here).
Initials in various typestyles are everywhere these days. On walls, in rooms, stenciled on cabinets...

Even Mikka of a mischmashed life has an ongoing alphabet wall project inspired by this...

I am so drawn to the varying typefaces, colors and sizes that I might start my own alphabet wall in my son's room: aBCdeFgHijkLMnOpQRstUvWxYz!

I am not really a lover of serifs as you might have figured from my Trebuchet font choice here. But I can't help smile when I see this serif tote. I love how the bag strap merges with the serif and how they kept to an asymmetrical look with one serif rather than two flowing from both straps!

Today, I am loving... serif or sans, the typeface initial trend!

pencil lead art

Who would have thought you could sculpt the alphabet on pencil lead?

Am absolutely amazed by the amount of patience it must have taken to get to such intricate sculptures. I break my pencil lead just writing! But artist Dalton Ghetti was able to create wondrous art with it!

I wonder though if the short length of these pencils is testament to the number of attempts to get to these magnificent miniature sculptures. If it is, then it seems the S was particularly difficult to make. :)

Photos from lushlee.

Watch out for another post on Dalton Ghetti's pencil sculptures next week. Meantime, let me leave you with links to previous posts on art from the most unusual and obscure things. Just click on each title.

Whimsical Wednesday!

It's the middle of the workweek once again! Take a break from typing away on your computer and go hand-write a letter...
It's a shame that with email and social networks these days, an actual handwritten letter has become romantic and whimsical and much more heartfelt and not at all a regular thing anymore.
Do you even remember the last letter you wrote or the last envelope you addressed? If you don't, it's about time you write one.

Or better yet...

And write a whole book. Though maybe it's better to type than hand-write, if it's a whole book you're writing...
Like Filipina Samantha Sotto did. She's counting down the international release of her novel Before Ever After on her new site here and is locally launching her book tonight.

Get whimsical and write something today! To reconnect with a friend you haven't seen in a while. Or to begin the plans towards turning your dream into reality. Have a whimsical Wednesday!
