unlikely black pairings

It isn't intuitive to me to pair pastels with black - like seafoam green is effortlessly paired with black in Mango's January 2013 Lookbook. Even though Michelle Williams inspired me here, I still haven't been able to actually do it.

Moreso, spring floral prints. I've paired them with stripes (inspired by this), but not with black. Not yet.

Maybe I need these pieces the Prabal Gurung for Target Collection as my training wheels.

He incorporated black within the floral pieces - via the collar, neckline, arm & waist bands...

... so I don't need to struggle with breaking old design sensibilities by pairing a floral with a separate black piece.

Love this colorful print called Nolita with the black details! Gave the print an attractive edge.

Also love these shorts!

It's funny that the very reason I struggle with pairing pastels or florals with black is precisely what makes the pairing so striking. While in my head, feminine, delicate colors & prints don't go with masculine, tough black, my heart says yes to the edginess that black gives the otherwise old and somewhat Stepford Wife feel of pastels & florals.

Okay, I resolve to try harder to break my ancient style sensibilities and mix my pastels and florals with black this week. Maybe I can start with pairing my florals with a small black piece - like a black belt?

Will you mix things up again with me?

Prabal Gurung for Target Collection will be out from February 10 to March 23, 2013. Hoping I can score these pieces via Target.com. View more of the collection with prices via nitrolicious.

pumpkin colors

I've always been drawn to the sight of pumpkins. I think it's the huge pop of orange brightening up the supposedly scary holiday. So it's no wonder these pumpkins made me smile - with colorful cartoony faces painted on the fun, orange gourd!

Though it turns out, painting over the orange still draws me in. Okay, I guess it isn't surprising that I would be captivated by these colorful, patterned pumpkins...

Don't you love their fun, Mexican pinata vibe?

What about the restrained pops of color & pattern on these white pumpkins?

Even purely white pumpkins look gorgeous!

Who would have thought white pumpkins could look this sophisticated?

Now what do you think of these black ones?

Turns out, with some paint, tinsel, glue and twine, Shannon of NYC Taught Me brought some punk to her pumpkins!

I'm not sure I'm ready to bring this punk aesthetic to my home. But I don't mind a black pumpkin for an interesting vase...

And to my dear friends & family in New York & New Jersey (where the top pumpkin photo was actually taken), I wish I could send you these pretty white pumpkin candles to help out during the power outages going on now. Stay safe. You are all in my prayers!

I guess it doesn't matter if pumpkins are orange or not. I'm still quite enamored by them in any color!

So orange or not, pumpkin or no pumpkin, have a happy Halloween everyone!

summing up this summer

The kids are back in school. Summer has officially ended. It was a great summer so I'm paying tribute to it via selections from the Accessorize Spring/Summer 2012 Lookbook (which you might spy in Accessorize shops in the malls of Manila today).

Let me start with this summer's colors... Spring's pastels especially seafoam green and baby pink from here, here, here and here. And black as Gwyneth Paltrow wore here.

It was also a great summer for my family.

Isabella took advanced ICE-skating lessons. Among other summer activities like these, Noah created HANDMADE magic all summer (will post about this soon). Best of all, we went on so many road trips (though not in what looks like a VW Kombi in this lookbook) which led me to many captivating tunnels like the ones here.

And of course, I captured them all with my cam.

Yes, it was truly a wonderful summer!

Hope you had a great one too!

Found: Celine-ish Box Bag

Remember how I was lusting after Celine box bags here?

Well, guess what I found in SM department store yesterday? Isn't it pretty Celine-ish?

Oddly, even though I've been drawn to these authentic camel Celine box bags...

... I decided to get this gray one.

Too bad it wasn't available in more colors like the real thing. Would have wanted a blue-green one or that almond color I've been swooning over here.

But I have to say, at P629.75 (about US$14.50), I wouldn't mind letting undesirable, damaging things - more rainwater, than a cigarette though for me (see related post here) - near my Celine-ish box bag.

Can't wait to use my Celine-ish box bag!

Color Obsession: gold

I was always a silver rather than gold kind of gal. I had always thought gold was tacky. But I realize that lately, I've been drawn to gold. I still prefer rose gold, bronze & antique gold over yellow gold, but I've certainly been wearing gold jewelry more these days (especially my 90-year-old Lola's vintage jewelry which are all sorts of gold).

There is definitely an air of opulence to gold. Particularly on the dinnertable. Don't these gold chargers make this table quite elegant? Especially with the crisp, black napkins!

I'm totally charmed by this gold silverware (Ironic, right?).

I love the contemporary style of this silverware. Imagine if these gold utensils had those ornate curly-cue carvings? They wouldn't be fit for home-use - unless the Queen of England came to visit! This sleek deco design makes them appropriate for dinner parties at home.

On the other hand, this ornate front facade wouldn't be the same without the elaborate gold curly-cues. Now isn't this the most regal-looking city hall?

I also love the gold and navy combination. Isn't this gold tray set off perfectly by the striped navy bedlinens? Is there anything more chic?

Even when worn, navy tones down gold and gives this sparkly skirt a stylish but effortless look.

Yes, gold... paired with black or navy... is worth obsessing about. After all, everyday should be filled with effortless elegance.

Color Obsession: black & white

Black & white patterns & prints have been catching my attention these days. I don't mean the black & white in black & white photos.

Somehow, this 'black & white' doesn't feel lively enough for the festive season at hand. The black & white I am drawn to these days is black & white in full color... Like the stunning black & white striped curtains in the photo above and this striped chair...

Or this woman's elegant combination of black & white checks & polka dots...

Or these black & white chevron prints and shower curtain illustration here...

Or even the Darth Vader wall decal here...

Don't you think these fun & quirky patterns & prints take the austere out of black & white? I just love black & white in full color.

Oh, and I just had to add these season-appropriate, black & white striped gifts!
